Tips

  • Make your own hummingbird food! Mix 1 part sugar to 4 parts water. You don't need to add food coloring.
  • Insert twigs or branches in the container pots. Watch the hummingbirds perch on them!

Ruby-Throated HummingBirds Photos

Pictures of hummingbirds and flowers that attract them

Hummingbirds are one of the funniest subjects I like to photograph. They're also the most challenging. Below are some of my tips.

July 2011 - Not many hummingbirds this year.

Video of a young ruby-throated hummingbird.

I just got my Black & Blue Salvia planted when a young male showed up, enjoyed the flowers and rested a bit. See the red dots on the throat?? That indicates that it is a young male... colors are still changing.

Young Male Ruby-Throated

I've added twigs to my flower pots. They make good perches for the hummingbirds (dragonflys, too!). This one is perched on the flower stem.

Young Male - See the red dots??

Young male ruby-throated hummingbird. Notice the red dots on his neck....his feathers will change. (Young males will look similar to the female.)
